Baja California endemic hedgehog cactus with solitary, branched or clumping stems and pink or purplish pink flowers. Stems are 1.6 to 3.9 inches in diameter, with 4-7 round, dark central spines and 8-14 whitish radial spines. This plant is found in central BC near Bahía de los Angeles and on adjacent Gulf islands, as well as inland to the Sierra San Borja and Sierra San Francisco. It flowers in early summer.

Two subspecies are recognized. Alicoche (Echinocereus ferreirianus subsp. ferreirianus) has 4 central spines and stems 12-16 inches tall, and is found on the eastern side of central BC. The former E. lindsayi, described in 1975, now Lindsay's Cactus (Echinocereus ferreirianus subsp. lindsayi), has shorter stems (5 inches or less) and 4-7 central spines, and is nearly extinct in nature (formerly found at the type locality south of Cataviña in the central desert).
