Arabian highland aloe with deep red (or rarely yellow) flowers on branched inflorescences. Usually solitary, occasionally dividing into clusters of 2-6 heads. Leaves are gray-green to gray-brown, thick and rigid. Flowers are smooth (free of hairs or bumps) and appear in fall. Inflorescences are 3-5 branched, with densely flowered racemes.

This species is found on a limestone plateau in south-central Yemen at 4600-7000 feet. Annual rainfall there is about 3 inches, with hot summers and cold winters. The name comes from the Greek for "desert loving," referring to this harsh environment. It is very rare in cultivation.

This species occurs with A. luntii and A. sabaea. It appears to be related to two plants with similarly thick and rigid leaves: the Somali A. rigens (very fine hairs on the flowers) and the Yemeni A. fulleri (smaller, fewer branches on the inflorescence, slightly papillate flowers).
