This Virginia Fantails is a member of the Mallow Family and is native from southeast Ontario and Pennsylvania into Virginia to Kentucky up to Indiana & Ohio, and has been introduced to New York, New Jersey, Michigan, and Massachusetts. It is being used or experimented with in Poland and some places in Europe as a fiber plant, a fodder crop, a soil stabilizer, and a source for honeybee honey. A source in England reports it living about 15 to 20 years. Its leaves are palmately cleft with 3 to 7 lobes. I saw several plants in pots being sold at Jenkins Arboretum in their little garden center with an excellent label sign with two photos of the mature plant and of flowers. I did not see any sources of nurseries or garden centers selling this species. Most information online is botanical and not horticultural. It makes a large perennial similar to the Glade Mallow of Napaea dioica also in the Mallow Family.
