Mahan is a type 2 pollinator requiring a type 1 pollinator for nut production.
Mahan originated in 1910 from a seed planted by J.M. Chestnutt in Kosclusko, Attala County, Miss. in about 1910. The parentage is not known, but it is thought that Mahan may be a self of Schley. Mahan has been used widely in breeding, and 8 children of this cultivar have been released. They are Kiowa, Choctaw, Pawnee, Mohawk, Harper, Tejas, Wichita, and Mahan-Stuart.
Average nuts per pound 50 and average kernels 53%.
Mahan has one of the largest nuts and has a thin shell with an unusually high percent kernel, but the kernels rarely reach the end of the nut, which makes it one of the lowest in percent fill. Yield has been low. Mahan is often still found at nurseries because people still ask for it due to its large nut. You might get some good years out of it, but the kernel will eventually no longer fill the nut, and the nut will become inedible.
It is not recommended for planting, either in the commercial enterprise or in the home yard.
