Introduced from Asia this is not a native plant to the Americas. It has naturalized in AL, AR, FL, HI, GA, LA, MS, NC, SC and TX.
Southern rockbell has very thin stems reminiscent of mono-filament line. Leaves can only be found at the very base of the plant.
It can be found on disturbed land, roadsides, and waste areas. It is a charming little plant. It's hard to resist smiling at the cheerful, bright blue flowers; small though they may be.
