    It's interesting to point out that sphagnum was used quite a lot during the first world war by germany and england. About 90% percent of the cells in a sphagnum plant are dead and this is so that they can be filled in with water later on. This was the reasoning behind using the plant to tend wounds due to its great absorbency. The plant is also said to have antiseptic properties.
