There are 75+ species of this succulent genus. Related to the Aloe, they also have long-lasting, tubular flowers borne sparsely on long stems. In fact, the genus is named for the stomach-shaped flowers. The seedpods ripen from green to brown.

Gasterias are native to southern and southwestern Africa where some grow in sun while others grow in shade.
