Here in Texas near the Gulf coast, my Sombreuil grows as a large, open shrub about 7' tall by 8' wide and blooms copiously and repeatedly. Unlike many of my roses with high petal counts, her blooms rarely ball in wet or humid weather. I do not spray and she gets a little black spot in the spring but tolerates it well.

    Noted by Antique Rose Emporium:
"This healthy but thorny climber was previous sold by us as 'Colonial White.’ Its creamy white blooms are very large, flat, and quartered, with a most delicious Tea fragrance. The plant is reportedly free from mildew. This mannerly climber is ideally suited for use as a pillar rose, or training on a low wall, fence, or trellis."

An old white or off-white climbing rose. Dates back to the late 1800s. A nice rose for that spot in which you need to keep something in bounds, as Sombreuil does not grow too large. The blooms are thick and have an old rose form. Very pretty. I sprayed mine with a systemic fungicide here in my humid Long Island garden but I am not sure that it really needed to be sprayed.
