Browallia or Amethyst-Flower or Sapphire-Flower is a member of the Solanaceae that is the Nightshade Family that includes the Petunia. Browallia is native to tropical South America; I saw some wild ones growing near a short waterfall in the jungle mountains of Peru in 1976.This cultivar of 'Endless Illumination' is a fairly new introduction from Proven Winners with bluish-purple flowers. It is of the taller cultivars that get to 16 inches high, like the mother species, while shorter cultivars as the 'Troll Series" only get to 10 inches high. The genus of Browallia was named after Johan Browall who was an 18th century Swedish botanist. I find this species to be an easy and reliable annual in the North in some shade. In its native habitat it is a perennial, like so many tropical plants that are used as annuals where frost and winter kill the plants.
