Aechmea is one of the largest and most diverse genera of Bromeliads. There are about 170 species classified that are native to Central & South America. Most are epiphytes or rock dwellers that conserve water in their urn-like or vase-like structure of a rosette of stiff leaves.
Many species have spines on the margins of the leaves and many do not. They can be planted in moist, well-drained soil in the ground or in potting soil in pots and liking filtered light. Some are awesome houseplants, and one waters the plant by pouring water into the vase of leaves.
