This is such a hardy plant that it has escaped cultivation to naturalize in the northeast corner of the Great Lakes region. It produces a huge amount of flowers that will have either 4 or 6 tepals. Has a slight tendency to wilt. It's one of the few plants that tolerates black walnut tress.

A good variety of Clematis to grow in the north, C. viticella 'Etoile Violette', produced 3-inch-diameter violet flowers that began blooming in late June and continued until August. It also had 80 to 100 percent coverage during peak bloom time and no clematis wilt during the six-year study period.

My Purple Monster climbs up a 6ft post and engulfs a birdhouse and still heads to the sky. It's now 12 ft high.
