Garlic plants will occasionally produce pollinated seeds, especially if the bulbils are removed from the flower head. The purple stripe and marbled purple stripe groups are the most likely to produce seeds.

It has been estimated that 5% of the artichoke-type garlics may have "neck bulbils" (smaller cloves about the stem of the garlic) in addition to the main head.
