    A rare native wildflower.
  • Posted by ILPARW (southeast Pennsylvania - Zone 6b) on Jul 11, 2018 11:56 AM concerning plant:
I just discovered this small wildflower at Longwood Gardens in southeast Pennsylvania at the edge of their The Meadow. It is native to the central US the most, in Nebraska to Texas, some areas of Wyoming into New Mexico, Arkansas & Missouri and then various spots and areas in: Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, one spot in Michigan, and spots and areas in the Southeast from North Carolina into Florida back to Texas. It gets about 6 to 9 inches high and spreads 1 to 3 feet as a matt. It grows in full sun and in dry to moist soil. It forms a deep taproot that helps it survive drought. Not easy to transplant. Some native plant and specialty nurseries sell it, as North Creek Nursery in southeast Pennsylvania. My friend Dale who lives near North Creek Nursery bought some there and planted them above a high wall holding back a slope.

Showy deep pink to purple flowers on trailing 1 to 3 foot stems bloom throughout the summer.
    Landscape uses:
Use low poppy mallow in a sunny, dry, wildflower garden or let it spill over the edge of a retaining wall or a raised bed.

on 8-4-2019: 3 from Prairie Moon & 6 from 2015G
MrsBinWY On April 13, 2019 Seeds germinated
1 from each group; observed 1 on 5-10-20 from the 3-23-19 sowing that went outside; observed 2 on 5-10-20 from the 3-23-19 sowing that stayed at room temp
MrsBinWY On March 23, 2019 Seeds sown
50 seeds from Prairie Moon. 24-hour soak (starting w/hot water) & a few drops of liquid smoke. Removed the seed coats from a few (12) but quit after damaging a couple embryos. Put 25 (w/6 removed seed coats) & 25 (w/6 removed seed coats) in 2 different milk jugs. One will stay at room temp. The other will go to the back patio (because the sun room won't be very cool given the forecast for the next few days). Brought it back in on 3-31-19.
MrsBinWY On February 16, 2019 Seeds germinated
1 - The first seed that germinated seemed to stall out in the cold. I moved the container to room temp, and right away 2 more germinated and unfurled their cotyledons. I saw another 2 radicals showing today (3-10-19). Total of 7 emerged (counting the 1st one that failed). Beginning to wonder if the cold treatment after the hot soak w/liquid smoke is the best approach...
MrsBinWY On February 9, 2019 Seeds sown
50 seeds from 2015G, soaked overnight with a few drops of liquid smoke, removed seed coat, only 1 or 2 or 3 looked viable, cool sun room
MrsBinWY On June 20, 2018 Transplanted
On 6-20-2018, planted 1 by Liatris punctata; 1 by Penstemon linarioides; & 1 in the new rain garden in the back yard.
