Leyland Cypresses are gorgeous trees! No doubt about it. They naturally grow in a perfect "Christmas tree" shape and form thick screens for privacy. But unfortunately the Leyland has fallen victim to itself. It has been so loved & so pretty & so fast growing (3' per year) that is has been overplanted & is now suffering the plight of so many popular plants that have been overused.
It was originally relatively free of pests & diseases, but when population explosions happen in the plant world then pests & diseases follow close behind. The Leyland is the victim now of Seiridium and Botryosphaeria cankers, Cercospora needle blight, and Phytophthora and Annosus root rots. These diseases are spreading rapidly from the southernmost range of the Leyland and are killing Leylands fast. In central Florida the nurseries will not even sell Leyland Cypress because of these problems. Alabama & North Carolina are starting to have problems also.

Do yourself a favor & choose something else. It's unfortunate that this has happened but you will regret it when your 40' tall tree dies.
