Dwarf Globe Blue Spruce [Picea pungens 'Glauca Globosa'] is an excellent conifer for small gardens. It is capable of reaching a mature size of 8 feet diameter... but this is accomplished over a substantial amount of time. The gardener needs to understand how to prune and groom conifers if he wants to succeed with this particular plant. This Blue Spruce will eventually develop a central leader... and if it is not removed the plant will lose its globular shape and begin to assume an inverted teardrop form.
This particular Blue Spruce is rated as hardy from zones 2-7. If it will be planted in the southern end of this range the following is recommended:
1. Plant in soil that drains well but can stay slightly moist. This plant is only nominally drought tolerant.
2. Plant in an area that receives shade from noon until 4PM.
3. Ideally, plant it where it will be protected from hot summer winds.
A gardener in zone 7 would probably be well advised to consider R.H. Montgomery Dwarf Blue Spruce as a superior alternative to this dwarf conifer.
