This cultivar of 'Gro-Low was selected by Synnesvedt Nursery in Glenview, Illinois back in the 1970's. Unlike the mother species that grows about 6 to 8 feet high, this cultivar only grows about 2 to 3 feet high and spreads along the ground. Plants often are dioecious where the male plants bear little catkins about 1 inch long that persist into winter while female plants bear small panicles of yellowish flowers; though some plants can be polygamous in having mostly one gender and yet some of the other. The female plants bear small clusters of red, hairy fruit in late summer that can persist into winter. This has become a popular groundcover with landscape architects and professional landscape designers where they want an informal or naturalistic style. The great majority of homeowners don't know this plant and don't use it; a few will buy it if a nurseryman really recommends it.
