Unlike others, I have not yet experienced a problem with Goldsturm being too aggressive, but rather have been actively dividing it in the spring to encourage a bigger swath. Nice bright gold fall bloomer that does not require staking (a deal breaker in my garden). I let the seedheads stand through winter for the birds. Sturdy enough plant to be used as a front support for Crocosmia 'Lucifer' and the two bold colors blend well together.

Perennial plant of the year in 1999. If you can't grow anything else, you can grow this plant. It provides bright sunny flowers for weeks in late summer. Its spread is relatively fast and the clump grows dense flowers within a few years. Divide and share with friends every 2 or 3 years.

Deer and rabbits have never eaten mine in the 5 years or so that I have gown this plant. It is also very drought tolerant. It attracts butterflies, and birds enjoy the seeds. Wintersows well. It is a long-lived perennial that loves the heat here in my zone 6 yard.

Compared to rudbeckia hirta, blossoms of Goldsturm are smaller, but more profuse, and overall height is shorter. It is much longer-lived than the hirtas. Its stems are strong and they stand up well to heavy rain and wind.

The most common form of Black Eyed Susan and usually available in any local nursery. Goldfinches will eat the dried seeds from the seedheads if you do not cut them.

One of the longest blooming perennials around. Expands yearly. Seems insect and disease free. Mid summer mainstay in/of the garden. Recommended.

Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia fulgida var. sullivantii 'Goldsturm')....

I have planted this plant in two different cities and both times I had to get rid of it. At each place, it overtook the area and got too large for me.

In the first city I just got rid of it, and in the city where I garden now I gave the whole plant to my next-door neighbor, who wanted it and whose garden is right behind me.

My neighbor who lives directly across the street from me has it in a front yard garden and her plant keeps multiplying into an area where she doesn't want it, so I remind her to cut the stems back when it's full of seed heads.

It's a great plant, but not for me. Just give it space to grow. It spreads by rhizomes.
