Native to Chile & a relative of the petunia. It is not recommended for hot & dry regions. They must have well drained soil but also require plenty of watering.
The blooms appear to be velvety textured. The bloom is five lobed, funnel or trumpet shaped with each lobe having a notched apex. There are dwarf hybrids. If you grow the larger varieties you will need to stake them. You can place sticks all around the plant & the leaves will quickly obscure the sticks so they don't appear staked but it will provide enough support.

In hotter zones this plant needs protection from afternoon sun. Another solution is to start them indoors very early, 10-12 weeks before frost, and get them transplanted outdoors as soon as possible after the last frost date. Grow them next to a midsummer-flowering perennial, such as rudbeckia. By midsummer the salps may not be around, but they will provide drama in spring and early summer.
