I've only seen one specimen so far and that is at the Midwest Collection at Morton Arboretum in Lisle, Illinois. The one specimen there has never looked good in its shady location, being lanky, and I have seen cedar rust or something similar bad on the leaves one year. Its native range goes from southern Wisconsin to northern Iowa to much of northern Minnesota and goes north over the Great Lakes to Maine and most of New England to areas of New York and then northern New Jersey, spots around Pennsylvania, southeast Ohio, and West Virginia. It is a recommended as a good native shrub in "Native Trees, Shrubs, and Vines for Urban and Rural America by Gary L. Highshoe.
