Dwarf or Northern Bushhoneysuckle is a small, mounded shrub that is stoloniferous, so it has branches rooting along the ground to eventually form a broad mass, especially in nature, not as much in landscapes. The leaves get to 5 inches long and become yellow to orange to red in autumn. The small yellow flowers are about 1/2 inch long and are a funnel-shaped bell and are borne in July and August. The fruit is a dry, long-pointed beaked capsule in autumn that is sometimes eaten by birds. In nature it grows in upland sites in or around woods, on slopes, cliffs, and dunes. Its native range is from Nova Scotia, New England, the mid-Atlantic, down the Appalachians to northern Georgia, all around the Great Lakes, and off up into Manitoba and beyond. It is most common in far northern regions. It is offered for sale by some large, diverse nurseries and native plant nurseries. The genus scientific name came from being named after Dr. N. Dierville, who was a French surgeon who introduced some of these plants to Europe about 1700 AD.
