Commonly called Twinflower it is found throughout the state of Florida. It is a native & occurs naturally in Fl, Al, Ga, S.C., & Texas. Grows equally as well in dry conditions as it does in moist conditions. It's common name arises from it's habit of forming flower buds in pairs on the stem opposite each other & they usually open at the same time.
It can be argued as to whether this is an evergreen or deciduous but that strictly depends on the zone it's growing in.It spreads by underground runners as well as self sowing freely; however it is not aggressive & will not compete with larger species. It can be found occasionally for sale but there has not been a big commercial demand.
Twinflower is a larval food for the common buckeye & makes a nice addition to a butterfly garden.
