Small, solitary or clumping fishhook cactus from the SW US and mainland northern Mexico (but not Baja California). Stems grow to 8 inches or more tall, 3-4 inches in diameter, with 1-4 central spines (longest one hooked) and 20-35 radial spines. Flowers are pink, pink and white, or sometimes white.

Found in California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Sonora, Sinaloa, and Chihuahua. Used as medicine by the Pima (apparently boiled and used for treatment of ear problems). Relatively common in cultivation and locally common in habitat. Formerly known as M. microcarpa and M. oliviae (a straight spined variant). Sheldon's Pincushion (Cochemiea sheldonii) is taller and narrower, with white or pale pink flowers.
