Small, low-growing, solitary or offsetting cactus from the Chihuahuan Desert with purple-pink flowers. It has conical, furrowed tubercles with 0-1 central spines and 15-16 radial spines.

The genus is associated with Mammillaria and has dimorphic areoles with an areolar groove. It has been subsumed into 7 different genera over the course of its nearly 100 year history, and several former Neolloydia species are currently part of Sclerocactus. Neolloydia currently includes 2 species.

This widespread species occurs from southwest Texas well into several states of north-central Mexico, with a few named varieties. This species formerly included the now distinct N. matehualensis, a plant with 2 central spines and 10 radial spines from a small range south of Matehuala, and some consider the latter plant as part of conoidea in a monotypic genus.
