Native in the PNW, and across Canada and northern USA. Endangered in Kentucky and New Jersey. Found in swamps, stream banks, and ditches. Was used by natives to weave light duty baskets and as an ornamental trim in hide clothing. The leaves were sometimes laid over or under food in steaming pits.
