Native to FL, AL, GA & SC.
The small obovoid fruits, 1/4 to under 1/2 inch long begin green then turn pink to red & finally turn black when ripe.
The flowers are in flat topped cymes.
Although often found in moist to wet areas this plant can withstand drought & dry conditions very well & once established requires little supplemental watering.
This is a dense shrub & many birds especially cardinals like to make it their home as well as nesting site.
