Tall Fescue was one of the cool-season pasture grasses brought over from Europe to be useful for livestock. It has long ago naturalized into meadows of eastern North America. It is the second most common naturalized grass after Kentucky Bluegrass. Most eastern North American meadows have a lot of grasses and forbs that came from Europe and western Asia. It is also used as a turfgrass. A number of cultivars that have more fine texture than the mother species have been developed to be used in tougher turf situations than what Kentucky Bluegrass can take. It is used a good amount in athletic fields, playgrounds, roadsides, and airfields. The cultivars can also be used in landscape lawns that will be more drought and traffic tolerant than Kentucky Bluegrass.
