I've grown quite a few different heirloom tomatoes, and this consistently ranks among my favorites. I tend to prefer tomatoes with a complex flavor, and this one meets the criteria! It somehow manages to be both sharp on the initial taste and sweet after a moment. It makes a beautiful salsa and is a great addition to a plate of sliced tomatoes. People will be surprised to taste a ripe, mature tomato when they are expecting the harsher flavor of an unripened "green" tomato!

This year (2015) was my first year growing this variety. Nice big, bushy plants, loaded with tomatoes. I was afraid I would have trouble telling when they were ripe, but the bottom half turns a greenish-gold color that makes it easy to know when to check them. I was also afraid that the green color would be rather off-putting, but for me, at least, it isn't at all -- the flesh is the color of a perfectly ripe avocado! The flavor is a little sweet, balanced by just the right amount of tartness. This one is definitely on my list to grow again!

I trialed this one back in the late 90's. At time it did produce sizable beefsteak type fruits. Yield was lower than even the Brandywine. Not to my taste. In the 40's we grew a few Evergreens for the novelty. Never grew them in a control plot, but from what I remember Evergreen was superior.

One of the largest green beefsteak tomatoes, it can grow to over 1 pound. Has a strong, sweet, fruity flavor that is reported to be tastier than most red tomatoes.
Winner of the 2003 Heirloom Garden Show's taste test.

Very big and flavorful green heirloom tomato. It was a surprise to our customers just how good it tasted when we gave samples at market. It has been added to our keeper list.

Aunt Ruby's German Green tomato was a pleasant and tasty surprise for us this year. I haven't tried many green tomatoes, but this one has a great old-fashioned sweet and tangy flavor. These green tomatoes turn a light yellow to pink color on the blossom end when ripe, making it easy to tell when they are ready. Adding this one to our "grow again" in the tomato garden list.

Aunt Ruby's German Green is a top five large tomato variety for me. The flavor is balanced, yet sweet and mild. The best version of the ripe green tomato varieties. As with many heirlooms, there may be a small amount of cat-facing, yet never excessive. Weight is generally around a pound. Not disease prone in my garden. Also not the most prolific, but still a good harvest for a larger heirloom variety. A mid to late season producer.

Rated very high in my yearly taste tests.
