Ultimate Cold Frame and Starter House
Thinking of protecting a bed of lettuce this fall or dreaming of starting plants early next spring? A variety of 21st -century versions of cold frames are available. I've found two that are lightweight, easy to set up or move, and versatile. Both include ground stakes for securing.
The Starter House from National Gardening Association (http://www.garden.org) has a strong wire frame that snaps open. It's covered with Gro-tec fabric, which is a rugged, UV-resistant, rip-stop polyethylene material. A shade cover and carrying case are included. It measures 8 feet long x 4 feet wide x 3 feet high.
The Ultimate Cold Frame from Gardener's Supply (http://www.gardeners.com) is 70 inches long x 55 inches wide x 32 inches high. It has a cover of reinforced polyethylene over an easily assembled metal frame. There is a large, zippered screen window that can keep out insects, birds, and animals.
