Growing a Natural Lawn
The Natural Lawn & Alternatives, by Janet Marinelli (Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, 1993; $7.95), is a small book but very informative for anyone that wants to grow and maintain an environmentally friendly lawn. It includes tips on growing a pesticide-free lawn, fertilizing, and selecting grasses for different growing zones.

Favorite or New Plant

'Profusion' Crab Apple
The 'Profusion' crab apple is a nice choice for the landscape since it has good resistance to fireblight disease. One of its many attributes is the early purplish foliage that fades to bronze in summer. The single, deep red flowers in spring gradually fade to pink. Later, small 1/2-inch ornamental apples set and turn a dark maroon. This attractive fruit is persistent and provides winter food for birds.
