The Wildlife Gardener's Guide
The Wildlife Gardener's Guide, by Janet Marinelli (Brooklyn Botanical Garden, 2008; $9.95) is an all-region handbook devoted exclusively to the art and science of enlivening a garden with the presence of birds, butterflies, and other captivating insects. It includes 10 hands-on wildlife garden projects with step-by-step instructions, lists of plants that have critter appeal, and detailed plans for wildlife-friendly borders and containers.

Ruth Bancroft Garden Annual Sculpture in the Garden Show on June 14 and 15 will feature the works of local artists, along with an art sale. If you have never been to the Bancroft gardens, make this your excuse to drive over to Walnut Creek. You will be amazed at the landscape using a variety of colorful drought-tolerant plants and cacti.
