Western Mountains and High Plains
A guest on my radio show introduced me to a fascinating book about wild birds. The Audubon Society's Guide to Attracting Birds, by Stephen Kress (Cornell University Press, 2006; $24.95), will help you plan a landscape that's inviting to birds. You'll find tips on planting the right shrubs and trees, and providing food, water, and shelter to make your property more inviting. Tips on safe use of fertilizers and pest management are also included.
Clever Gardening Technique
Discourage Ants on Fruit
To prevent ants from reaching the ripening fruit in the home orchard, cut sheets of adhesive shelving paper into 7-inch strips and wrap them around the trunk, attaching them with staples. Be sure the sticky side faces outward. Ants will stop in their tracks or get trapped.
