Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival
The 15th Annual Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival happens November 5-9 in Harlingen, Texas. For tons of information, visit www.rgvbirdfest.com or call the event organizers at 800-531-7346. "Tropical Birds of the Border" is this year's theme, and blogging and birding in Spanish are among workshops you can attend. Daily field trips, keynote lectures, a trade show, and children's programs bring on all sorts of birders, whether backyard, novice, or veteran. A great time will be had by all, as they do every year.

Books

Tropical Plants
Tropicalismo!, by Pam Baggett, is new this fall from Timber Press and it is muy bien, indeed. A small book, but eye-catching with a striking orange canna on the cover, it contains just over 200 pages. Each two-page spread features one tropical delight of a plant and altogether, this one is a primer for our regions. Both Southern Coast and Tropical gardeners grow many of these plants, and take some for granted, so it is great to have solid information about them accompanied by stunning photographs. Icons denote basic care needs while the text expounds on the plant and its suitable companions. A great stocking stuffer! Learn more at www.timberpress.com.
