Books

Sunset Western Garden Book, 7th Edition
Sunset has just released the seventh edition of the Sunset Western Garden Book, (Sunset Publishing, 2001; $33), for many decades a valuable reference for this part of the country. The latest version contains descriptions of over 8,000 plants and 1,300 color photos. I particularly like the 32 special uses plant lists, such as "Plants for Arid Gardens" and "Plants That Attract Butterflies and Hummingbirds." There's also a "Guide to Gardening" that is alphabetically arranged, with concise descriptions of numerous gardening terms and practices, that is helpful for both beginners and experienced gardeners.
