Hot Wings: Indoor Native Butterfly Exhibit
Over 100 species of butterflies are native to the Tucson area in southern Arizona. Learn how to identify them and encourage them to grace your yard with appropriate plants at Tucson Botanical Gardens summer butterfly exhibit, Hot Wings. Enjoy close-up views of painted ladies, giant swallowtails, and many more in their cooled greenhouse. Also visit the outdoor butterfly garden to see which plants attract these delightful winged creatures. The special exhibit is open daily through September from 8:30 to 4:30. Admission is included with Garden admission ($8 for adults; $4.50 for children). For more information visit www.tucsonbotanical.org.
Pollinators of the Sonoran Desert (2004, $15) is produced in a handy bilingual (Spanish) format containing photos and descriptions of common hummingbirds, bats, butterflies, sphinx moths, bees, wasps, flies and beetles, as well as the plants they pollinate. It covers basic pointers on designing and creating a pollinator garden, including a table of native plants that attract specific creatures. The book's co-authors, Nina Chambers, Yajaira Gray and Stephen Buchmann, represent the organizations that produced the book, including International Sonoran Desert Alliance, Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, and The Bee Works, respectively.
