Favorite or New Plant

Saffron crocus
Most of us are familiar with the traditional crocuses that emerge in late winter to early spring. Often overlooked is one of my favorites, the autumn crocus or saffron crocus (Crocus sativus). Plant these corms now in rock gardens, borders, mass plantings and alpine gardens to be rewarded in late summer and early fall with bright purple blooms. If you plant enough, you can harvest the bright orange-red stigmas to impart flavor and a golden glow to fine cuisine.
