Filling A Tree Cavity?
Older trees that have not been properly cared for often have hollow cavities where limbs were removed. These cavities introduce wood-rotting organisms into the center of the trunk or branch, invite carpenter ant invasion, and can hold water to make a mosquito breeding ground. Using cement and mesh wire to fill the hole is not recommended for a number of reasons, but there is a way to fill the cavity. Clean out all the rot and debris you can and then use one of the spray foam products sold at home stores to fill cracks around doors and windows. The foam will harden and can be shaped to leave it flush with the original outer wood of the tree. You can even paint the surface to make the old cavity less noticeable.
