Flowering Alliums
For outstanding blooms next year, plant ornamental flowering alliums now. They come in colors of blue, purple, pink, beige, white and yellow. Bloom times can vary from spring to fall, depending on the species, with foliage varying from round to strap-like to broad. Star-of-Persia (Allium christophii) is huge, with a 6 to 8 inch blooms of lavender to lilac color. Allium karataviense, the Turkestan allium, is noted for large blooms (3 to 5 inches in diameter), beige to pink to reddish in color, borne above broad leaves.

Crackle Glass Pear Fruit Fly Traps
Fresh vegetables and fruits on the kitchen counter and table is highly recommended, but who likes the annoying fruit flies that flit around the fruit bowl? I especially like the crackle glass, pear-shaped tabletop fruit fly traps. Mix up the non-toxic lure with water and pour into the jar to bait the traps. Once the pesky fruit flies enter they can't escape. These make nice accents to the kitchen counter.
