Insect Repellents: Use and Effectiveness
Unfortunately, these days insect bites can be more than an itchy annoyance. Mosquitoes and ticks can carry serious diseases. Mosquitoes can transmit St. Louis encephalitis and West Nile virus. Ticks are carriers for Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and Ehrlichiosis. Insect Repellents: Use and Effectiveness from the US Environmental Protection Agency has information about EPA-registered repellents and other ways to protect yourself from biting insects. Well worth a look, even if your preference is botanicals. More information usually means better choices.

Quick Hose Connect/Disconnect Fitting
Screwing and unscrewing hoses -- together, hose and watering device, soaker hose to garden hose -- can be annoying, inefficient, and a real pain. Attach a metal set of quick connectors (male and female) for easy connection and disconnection. Usually the connect/disconnect process involves moving the outer ring forward and back with your fingers. Prices range from $6 to $10. The downside is that different brands often aren't compatible. Using one brand you prefer for all devices is the best strategy.
