American Clematis Society
To learn more about clematis, visit the American Clematis Society. Besides providing clematis-growing basics, the society's Web site offers a comprehensive database of which varieties to grow in different hardiness zones. There's also information about how to join, books they sell, and links to other clematis sites.

Guide to Growing Clematis
Most clematis books are from England, but the American Clematis Society's Guide to Growing Clematis in the United States, by Edith M. Malek (American Clematis Society, 1999; $20), is the first and only book solely dedicated to growing them in this country. It tells how to choose the right clematis; select the correct location; plant, fertilize, water, mulch, propagate; and control pests. There is also an innovative pruning program that takes the mystery out of a sometimes confusing subject.
