The New Seed Starters Handbook
Experienced and novice gardeners alike will find a wealth of useful information in The New Seed Starter's Handbook, by Nancy Bubel (Rodale Press, 1988; $16).
The book is loaded with information on seed germination, growing media, using hotbeds and cold frames, direct seeding and growing transplants, as well as saving and storing seeds. It also provides instructions for growing individual species, including vegetables, flowers, herbs, and woody ornamentals.
The folks in the University of Arizona Maricopa County Cooperative Extension office have produced an excellent fact sheet on frost protection that is a wealth of information for gardeners across the country. Check it out at http://ag.arizona.edu/pubs/garden/az1002.pdf.
