Holiday Garden and Train Show at the New York Botanical Garden
If you're in New York City this holiday season, check out the Garden and Train Show at the New York Botanical Garden. It runs through January 7, 2001.
As if the fabulous plantings and displays inside the eleven glasshouses of the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory weren't enough to keep us entertained during a winter visit, now there's the seasonal lighting plus the fabulous train show. The show features miniature trains traveling through a landscape of waterfalls, bridges, mountains, and streams, along with replicas of historic New York houses and, new this year, the New York City skyline. For more information, contact the New York Botanical Garden at (718) 817-8700 or visit the Web site at www.nybg.org/events/.
Earth on Her Hands: The American Woman in Her Garden
Earth on Her Hands: The American Woman in Her Garden, by Starr Ockenga (Clarkson Potter, 1998; $55), highlights eighteen women, eighteen gardens, and eighteen different stories. This is a portfolio of gardens photographed as works of living art. Each visionary "dirt gardener" shares hard-earned insights; each profile reveals the intricate process of creating a spectacular garden, working with nature and time and the gardener's guiding hand. The resulting gardens are rich and satisfying, deeply personal, and beautiful.
