When Bad Weather Hits

by Charlie Nardozzi

At a time when severe weather seems to be increasing, it?s good to know gardeners have a resource to help them save prized garden plants and landscapes from destruction. Weather-Resilient Garden: A defensive approach to planning and landscaping, by Charles W.G. Smith (Storey Publishing, 2004; $19.95) provides emergency and long-term solutions for weather-related plant and garden damage.

Smith is a vocational agriculture teacher and former horticulturist with White Flower Farm. He begins his book with recommendations for creating a weather-resilient garden, including descriptions of the 100 top weather-resilient plants. Smith then describes gardens that have weather-related problems involving natural forces such as wind, snow, ice, drought, fire, hail, and flooding. He details ways to save plants when any of these major weather events hit.
