Mid summer here and 2 very late blooms plus a Selenicereus (they always bloom around this time of year).


Selenicereus Macdonaldiae. A huge bloom. 12 inches across. One night stand.

Lady ruffles.

Gladyce jones. One of the most photogenic epis. Average grower,great blooms!
And I have 3 more coming shortly.

Only one to go after this one and this is Elkhart.

Who takes up the lag time? USA Epis won't start for months yet.

I was out walking Molly and saw that I had just missed another off season bloom in another yard. That's as close as I get to filling in the gap.

Still watching but have not posted for a while. I noticed 5 buds on mine while watering and will try and fill the gap at least for this month. I must admit that my attention to my Epis has been limited recently as I focus on forest clearing, pond repairs and planting up areas with gingers, costus , bamboos and bromeliad. I think I have Chainsaw elbow!

Liz, WH Morris is an epi that grows very strongly and has a great bloom that is fragrant too.
However it is a very shy bloomer and late, always around Xmas time. You need a big plant to get blooms.
Here's a rather average pic of one that everyone knows that has been blooming profusely here.
Missed most of them but managed to snag this one before it folded.
A great grower and night bloomer, fragrant too.

First one of the year for USA? Not sure of the name but I have two more buds on another plant. Might make it before the end of the month or might be February. I manage to get at least one bloom every month of the year.

4 of mine came crashing down last night, along with the dead lemon branch they were hanging from. The 2.30" of rain was too much for the branch. What a tangled mess! They needed repotting anyway, so when the rain stops long enough I'll have to see what I can do with them. The baskets are sitting on the ground for now. I'm hoping I can save the Achmeas and the Billbergia that they landed on.

I can imagine the mess Carol. I had two benches collapse during this off season. One bench was a 14 foot long piece of roofing metal. The support on one end collapse and everything slid to a pile on the ground. The second one was a similar length of metal roofing but this one rusted and gave way in the middle so everything collapsed from the ends to the middle. That mess is still there. Only one or two Epis on that bench. The other 2 gallon pots were full of soil and dormant Gladioli.
I think I said recently in my blog that there are always battles to win but we never want to win the war otherwise all the fun has gone away.
Rarely have I seen such a clear blue sky as we have today. A perfect shade of blue and a fresh southwesterly wind.

Well, I'm always crying about our lack of rain, but now we're in a never ending storm. The street isn't quite dry when the next wave hits. It's making things bad in the burn areas. A lot of those plants that I struggled to keep watered are now drowning. Ah well, one day it's chicken, the next day feathers.

Hi Carol, I know exactly what you mean, my garden is too rain soaked too. Aeoniums bowing down already. Thankfully the others are still holding.

On the flipside of things, the epis are doing nicely in spite of the rains. Maybe because we are not experiencing any low 20F's. With the rains, it keeps the overnight temps at 40F to 50F range. The city trees finally deciduous, so there is now more light hitting them too.

I do hope it will be a lovely Spring time blooming here later.

My in ground stuff will be ok, but the potted ones are iffy. My Clivia are in bud (one in bloom) and the pots are soaked with no dry out time between storms.

Heading for 3 days of 40c and no rain for many weeks here.

Our rain season begins Oct. 1, and I've had more rain in Jan. than I got for the entire season last year. Our so called normal is 13+ inches for the season, but it depends on the micro climates. Our western coastline is not north and south, and we have mountains that come right to the sea, so the numbers vary a lot.

Ouch, those are real sizzler temps Steve!

Carol - How do you survive on 13 inches of rain. We had 248 inches last year.

Steve - just watching the cycling in Adelaide. Not sure how hot 40c is but sounds like about 100f. Everywhere looked brown. Not sure how they keep the vineyards green

Mike, Our official total for the season last year was under 4". This series of storms that just ended gave us more than that in 3 days. We depend on the snow pack in the Sierras. The canals run around 700 miles. Also the Colorado river provides about 30% of our water...another 300 mi. You live in Paradise...until the mountain finally blows. I would take my chances with the mountain! If I could afford it.
