There hasn't been much on here lately about these plants so I thought I would add a few pictures of some of mine. I just started growing them a year or so ago and really like them. Most of the ones I have originate in Central America. They are farmed and readily available.
Some with blooms or blushing.

Nice bloom photos Michael. Though it is a mixed feeling for me when I see them in bloom, since they are monocarpic. Hope it makes new pups later on!

Very nice! I grew some of theose when I lived in Beaufort. Yours are certainly prettier than the T. recurvata I posted on the brom forum yesterday.

I have been growing Tillandsia for many years. The previous home owners collected them and left a driftwood display of them for me.
They took care of themselves on the outside display as I had other interest. I turned my attention and interest in the Tillandsia a little over a year ago and have resumed adding.
Here is a peek at some of the new outdoor displays I am working on.











There's much discussion in the Bromeliad thread on the Tillandsias at times. Maybe this is the time to give the Tillandsias their own thread that I believe is much deserved.

Beautiful Tillies, Scott! I had a few in the greenhouse, but they haven't done much, and take up a lot of space.The small blooms I've gotten haven't lasted very long, so I haven't gotten any more. I really envy you being able to grow things outdoors.

I spotted this colorful one Tillie growing way up in a backyard oak tree today, I don't know it's identity.

Nice find Lin! Looks like T. setacea (southern needleleaf). I need to take a walk in some wooded areas to see some of the natives other than the recurvata that grows in my yard on just about everything.

Here is recurvata growing on the pool cage screen.

It loves the Norfolk Island Pine needles.



And of course branches.

I think the seeds must get stuck on anything rough like the lichen on the tree branches.

LOL, I apparently knew the name at one time because I already have a dozen photos at the database entry for Southern needleleaf (Tillandsia setacea) Maybe I should delete a few of them.

@emddvm Michael very nice collection, love all the ways you have them displayed, looks like they are indoor plants. I think you've started a nice thread for Tillandsias, we need one.

Scott, what a nice bunch of Tillandsias you have, and that they were left behind for you. I love the old tree, looks like there is a bromeliad down in there. Now is a nice time for nature hikes, just watch out while you're looking up in the trees not to trip over tree roots.

Lin, leave all those photos, they're great.

I mostly have native Tillandsias, but have purchased a few in the past couple years, mostly from the bromeliad society sales, ones they say do well outside. I'll get photos later and post.

Here are some of the plants I have in the greenhouse. These are mainly bigger ones like xerographica but some others also. Several mounted on cork bark. Sorry about the algae. It won't get much better till spring cleaning.

Snapped a few photos of my year old seedlings from my flowering T. utriculata. They are growing on the bark in the orchid baskets.



Here they are growing on the trunk fibers of my Paurotis palm.

I stopped at a ACE hardware today to pick up some seed starter mix and just had to run through their greenhouse. Look what just jumped right into my basket! No label of course but it looks like it might be T. lorentziana.
What do you think? If that is what it is it comes from a significantly higher altitude with far less humidity than I can provide here at the beach.

Scott those little seedlings are nice. I wish I could grow some outside too. So far this winter it might have been possible but we will get some freezing weather at some point I am sure.
I will add some more pictures soon of others I have. I think I have around forty in the house and thirty in the greenhouse.

One of my favorite tillies, is native T. simulata which is starting a flower again.

This is a photo of the same plant from Feb. 2017 a bloom that started in Dec of 2016, the second is when it was at peak bloom in April of 2017, so you can see how long the flower last, over four months from start to finish.

This is a second huge plant that I found on a broken branch just recently while on my morning walk, photo taken today 1-15-19, you can see the huge dried up old flower, has three new nice offsets.

I am glad someone like you finds these pretties and cares for them. I had a great collection of Tilandsias, all well attached to trees and shrubbery but they were no match for a nearby hurricane, I can't remember which one, it was not much of a problem where we lived but the wind took the tillies.

Sherri, one of the ACE's here has a garden dept larger than you would find in a big box store.

Nice. I think the Ace Hardware stores in smaller towns are much larger than the one here. We had two but one Miller Hardware took over last year.

We have them in our tiny town. The only places to find plants are Ace or Walmart. The only problem is that the Ace prices are almost double anywhere else. They do put them all on sale at the end of the summer, so I've gotten some nice plants then.
