That looks like a Lichen to me. Where are you located?

Circumpolar temperate. I have come across this one a few times at our Pennsy place and here in NJ in the Ramapo mountains.

Yes, I'm curious too. The information I found said east of the Mississippi River all the way to the Arctic Circle and very rarely, in Alaska.

Ah! The location is good! And the Pink Earth Lichen is the common name of the id I gave you - Dibaeis baeomyces! They are the same thing and quite distinctive!
I spent hours looking and identifying Lichen for the fun of it. They are truly interesting! Smiling
