I picked up this orchid at Trader Joe's the other day on an impulse. I knew it would frustrate me not knowing what its genus is. I'm completely unfamiliar with the spike/bud structures and the flower shape. The first bud opened earlier today.....Can anyone help with this?

It is in the Oncidium Alliance. Exactly what hybrid it is does not ring a bell. It has beautiful color though.

I made a vow almost the day I started with orchids that no matter what, I never buy an orchid without a tag. Even so, I do break down every once in a while. A tag is not a 100% guarantee ever to have the correct name but it is better than no tag at all!
Maybe some body will recognize it.

The Trader Joe's plant tag may hold a clue a clue of sorts, indicating perhaps the grower? I saw the Matsui name a few names and that means it would be quite impossible to pinpoint the name, according to their website.
Or any other grower?

I think its gorgeous and, luckily, I don't live by the same rules as Bill. I don't care what it is as long as it makes me happy. Lovey dubby

Yes @BigBill, I've been going through Onc. Intergeneric lists and this has characteristics of Burrageara (Oncidopsis), Colomnara, Miltonia and on and on. I was kind of hoping to at least narrow down the genera. For a minute I was convinced that it's Oncostele… but I'll never know and that's OK. I will make a tag that reads 2-19-19.
When I go through "new orchid withdrawals" [ because it's too freezing cold out here to order them online] I buy orchids without tags - I call them rescues. As @DaisyI put it "as long as it makes me happy".
There is nothing on the tag @Ursula. No grower name. The tag said Trader Joe's ….Exotic Orchid. lol
Thank You! everyone!

It is just that in orchids, we have different goals, that's all.
More people grow orchids to be happy as you say.
I grow orchids to be happy but I want to win awards from the AOS. That is my ultimate goal. I can't win anything with a plant that has no name. I still grow dozens of orchids that aren't awardable but I grow and select plants loooking for my next award at the same time.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with either method. As long as we all end up happy, right?
