Our lovely Coral Bark Maple suffered damage because of heavy snow. The main branch spit open to the trunk. What should be done?

You will have to cut it off so it doesn't continue to split into the trunk.
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and proclaiming...."WOW What a Ride!!" -Mark Frost
