Ok I will probably get in trouble for this, but I hate to see any plant just tossed into a compost pile because it did not meet some hypothetical level of excellence. Not everyone is super concerned with having the perfect specimen. I am probably crazy for doing this, but if any one has irises that are not meeting their expectation, I will be glad to adopt and re-home them to give you space for your next perfect beauty.

In addition to my Guardian Garden and the Charlotte Iris Society (sub-garden special collection).
I already have quite a few NOIDs that I am growing and propagating, so why not add a few more to the list. If you are a hybridizer, even an amateur one, or just need to get rid of some irises, please let me know. If you know the name or the lineage of your culls that is great, I will keep up with it for future reference. If they are just NOID's that is fine too. I have plenty of space to grow and would like to make sure we don't loose that recessive gene that may one day make for the most perfect flower or cure for cancer....

In addition to the idea of the Iris Gene Back, the other part of this goal would be to provide irises (and other plants) to projects like Habitat for Humanity or other neighborhood/school beautification projects where having a named variety may not be so important. Please contact me and let me know what you have and how we can connect. While I don't have a large budget for this crazy idea, I could help with postage or if you are close enough make a road trip. So seriously think about it.

Thanks Grey

Probably not going to get into trouble, but the reason it's not good to propagate unregistered irises, is that somewhere down the road you will be driving someone crazy trying to identify a NOID, that was just a seedling that never had a name. Besides, there are so many named varieties that need homes.
Politicians are like diapers, they need to be changed often, and for the same reason.

I did try to cull the ugliest Iris ever saw and low and behold...it's back!!!!!

I have to side with what Tom said. Now for well known hybridizers it would be problematic if their rejects got out there and got mixed up with introduced specimens. You would possibly have owners of the rejected, but similar, iris making statements about how iris X has misshapen blooms, or poor branching, etc.so how could it ever have been introduced?!
And to emphasize what Tom said- there are sooooooooo many named iris that grow well, have no defects, and are looking for homes.

Thanks for all the responses and I understand that some hybridizers don't want knock offs floating around with their name on them. But a blooming iris is always a joy regardless if it has a name. I keep all my NOIDs labeled as NOID's even if it is NOID #145. That way when someone says I love that one, I know which one to give them.

Now for those of you getting rid of named varieties please don't let my love of NOIDs stop you from sending your extras to me! Smiling

Most of the irises posted on this site posted with the 'what is this iris' message are seedlings. Some are very similar to their registered parent but fall short of being a great iris. Shrug!

If someone posts a photo with the message that they bought it from.... and lost its name... then I will try and help make suggestions to 'jog' their memory. Otherwise its just a nice seedling.

Suggestions offered for a possible name often get tagged onto the seedling without proper verification and it is traded and/or sold as the registered iris thus polluting the gene pool.

As most of us are aware, "back in the day", a great many hybridizers had "businesses " and sold their own plants, either through other , established nurseries, or from their own "storefronts", often by "mail order". And many of those folks used their "unregistered " seedlings as bonus plants, or, donated them to local garden clubs, parks, etc., for landscape projects. This put many hundreds of "look-a-like" irises into the mix....many of those "look-a-likes" proved to be even "hardier" than the plants selected by the hybridizer for registration. Then, when you consider all the irises...that WERE registered with an "official name"...but lost it , over the years, all the "bee pod seedlings " that surely dropped, and then , all the "amateur hybridizer babies", that were grown, shared with friends and family, and , of course, were WAY to nice to ever dispose of...………..There are *probably* more "noid" iris being grown around the world , that there are registered iris !
I'm not against loving "noids", doing your own hybridizing, or even sharing them , but, PLEASE don't use terms like "similar to", might be", or "probably is", for the noids...if you MUST use more than "noid"....just add a number (i.e. "noid #27"), and, for those seedlings....use a "seedling number", so the iris has every chance you can give it , in NOT being confused with a named variety ! I, too, am a "Guardian Gardener", and, I also grow a great many "waifs & strays', noids, castoffs, and "also - rans"....they are all irises, most of them smell as good, look as pretty, and grow as well (or even better !) than anything with a $100 price tag, out of the latest catalog.....but, again, PLEASE do all you can to make sure they aren't confused with something else !!
We all have some , innate , desire to put a "name" on everything, and spend lots of time, energy, and often, money, trying to ID our favorite "noid".....and there is nothing wrong with that, BUT, just because 15 people , on this ,or any other forum", agree that your noid is "surely" the long lost "Wangdoodle", bred on the famous "Faraway Farms",.....that don't make it so! So don't start sharing it out under that name !! If one wants to donate, or share out irises....and you aren't 100% sure of the name....call it a NOID, or a "period iris" (i.e. "circa 1920-1930").
All that said, in a couple more months, it will be "sharing time for irises, and there are always irises to share, and anything that I have (size of the clump, permitting) is open for sharing, so, if I post something as "open to share", you are more than welcome to have some!
I'll put my soapbox away, for now ! happy gardening !!

You are absolutely right.
List it as a NOID #167 not similar too "Paid way too much"

I have no plans to sale, give or label anything as other than what I know things to be.

Thanks Again
I look forward to sharing season.
