Hello, I have found that there is a big difference in the growing rate of iris. I am looking for some newer ones that grow robustly Please share which iris that you have noticed in your garden that are not over 15 yrs old that fit this description.
Gypsy Lord is one that comes to my mind first. Your help is appreciated.

I just started growing irises (en masse) 2 years ago, so I will let the more experienced members answer your question. My first purchase in 2017 was mostly historics, so I really would like to know as well.

I have some of my mom's historic but love the really frilly ones too. I have 2 rows and have found that there is a big difference in the growth rates for some.

Maybe we will be enlighten soon, Evelyn.

you might think my clumps look fairly small, but that is on purpose. my growing space is very limited, and i have to purposefully keep my clumps in check.

so far my little garden has experienced tremendous growth from the following irises:

2015 sutton
'cozy cotton' a rebloomer
'cozy' outgrew it's 10-15 gal. pot. during its first year. put up multiple stems and reblooms all the time. the ffe bloom was 3 months after planting and was 41" tall. which is unheard of, because my irises tend to be much shorter than the posted heights. ex: if it says 36" mine usually reach 24-30".


2004 ghio
'exposé' not a rebloomer, but reblooms for me.i love the color and striping. loved it so much i bought another iris like it 'lucy lovejoy'. unfortunately lucy isnt' performing well,





2013 tasco
'autumn explosion' a rebloomer

this one had rot, but sherry/@henhouse told me not to worry it would outgrow its rot and then some. she was right.




2012 smith
'afterlife' i love the beards on this iris, and it performs every year, even in half shade.




2000 sutton (little beyond your date limit. but a real trooper)
not a tb but an ib. but, this one is hard to contain because it grows so well.
'concertina' a rebloomer





2011 ghio
this beauty is. it's wonderful to see glowing if planted in the garden where it can be observed backlit by sunset.
'dazzle'





2008 blyth
'by jeeves'
love this one, and 'capt. thunderbolt'. however, the 'capt.' doesn't grow as well for me, and so far the blooms have been really short about 10-12" and it's in its 2nd yr.



1998 sutton.
this one is way past your date parameters but i just really love this one. i like the color, form, and blooming extras.

'wing commander' not listed as a rebloomer, but has rebloomed multiple times for me.

Just keep in my mind that what grows well in one area, may not grow well in another. I think it may be best to check with gardeners in your area on ones that do well. For instance, Gypsy Lord is a slow grower for me.

If you still want to know what grows best over here, then I'll post a list.

i agree with rob. the flowers listed grow well for me in 10a and my zone is outside the ideal growing range for iris.

Ok, that would be the best. Anyone that is zone 6b could you post what does well for you?

Actually Teresa, not just zone 6b but in any states surrounding you with the same type of terrain and summer weather habits.

Absolute Treasure. It's a relatively new one, and for me, grows and multiplies like crazy, with big, beautiful foliage and wondrous true light blue blooms, blended with white. It bloomed for me its first year, by the second year had made a large impressive clump, and even though the deer or groundhogs ate off all the new foliage last year, it bounced back and bloomed beautifully. And even though our horribly rainy Spring and Summer last year even rotted out our forsythia hedge, Absolute Treasure survived, has formed a wonderful clump, and is sending up a bunch of bloom stems in this, its third Spring. It's a thriver!

That is good to hear about Absolute Treasure. A friend gave me a large rhizome to plant for the memory of my Mom. I hope it blooms this year.

Nice ones Teresa! I have or have had, a lot that cwwilson listed, and I can agree, they are weeds. I think that rebloomers have to multiply faster to rebloom. I don't know that is a fact, but the ones that rebloom every year for me are taking over. Los Coyotes is a monster too.
