Has anyone planted an October glory maple this time of year? Early May. I know fall is the best time but I wondered what would happen if I planted now.

You are in Texas, so it should be OK, however you are going to need to be very aware of it's care due to the heat. Make sure you dig the hole twice as big and fill with a good mix of native and amended soils. Mulch well, keeping it a few inches away from the trunk. Then water, water, water.
